Victim Support takes action on International Day Against Homophobia

International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia
Today is International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) and Victim Support is supporting the cause by holding events across the country.
We are helping to raise awareness of what IDAHO stands for by displaying posters(340 KB) in our branches across England and Wales. We’ll also be using Twitter to engage with followers using the hashtag #IDAHO2012
A number of events are taking place across our branches. This includes in the East Midlands where we are partnering with the organisation Citizen’s Eye to screen some short films and documentaries about the LGBT community.
IDAHO is fixed to 17 May, to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.
Adam Pemberton, Victim Support’s Assistant Chief Executive and Corporate Management Team Ambassador on LGBT issues, said: “Victim Support is proud that we help victims and witnesses of crime regardless of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. We support people who are victims of hate crime because of their sexual orientation and know how it can leave deep emotional and physical scars.
“IDAHO is a great way to highlight and overcome these prejudices and that is why Victim Support is holding these events up and down the country.”
Victim Support has climbed a massive 31 places in the last year to be voted the 45th most gay-friendly employer in the UK by gay rights charity Stonewall.
Last year an estimated 50 million people were exposed to campaign messages in about 50 countries, calling for an end to discrimination and violence against people on the grounds of sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
